\autoupdate Cannot Connect To The Update Server\ Office For Mac 2011
MS makes it very difficult to file a bug, but it seems to have brought me here, so here it goes. For the latest security update to MS Office for Mac 2016, the update will seem to succeed, but actually Office will try to update the same way again and again and again. This seems to be caused by the fact that I moved my Office 2016 apps into their own folder (in order to not interfere with a previously installed version as well as with Office application links that VMWare makes to my Windows Office install on my Mac). In other words, everything wants to install to the main Applications folder, but everything can't be there.
Anyway, Mac applications are supposed to be able to be moved like this without any problem. When I download the update.pkg file from the MS web site and install outside of Autoupdate, it actually does work. So, the problem must be in Autoupdate. Here's another bug: all my 'Recent File' history did not carry over when I upgraded to Office 2016 from Office 2011.
It actually showed the history from my Windows Office install, which was useless, because those files are on a different system. Ms office 11 for mac. It's presumably taking this info through my MS account which is now required for running Office.
I wish there were a way to decouple my installations, as I don't necessarily want to connect them for security reasons.
Microsoft has released an update for Office 2011 for Mac, which fixes a number of bugs with various Office application functions, but in addition closes a vulnerability in the program where a malicious program downloaded by one user could be run with that user's privileges by another local user on the system. While not a serious security vulnerability for most users, it has potential to be a problem for multiple-user setups such as computer labs. Microsoft has made this update available via its Autoupdate program that will either run automatically or which can be launched from the Help menu in any of the Office 2011 applications. The update is 110.1MB in size and once installed will bring the version of Office to 14.2.3.
