This issue occurs in Outlook for Mac 2011 version 14.5.5 and earlier versions when they are running on Mac OS X El Capitan (version 10.11). The issue does not occur on Mac OS X Yosemite (version 10.10) and earlier versions. By Geetesh Bajaj, James Gordon. You can write e-mail messages in Outlook 2011 for Mac in several different ways. Perhaps the easiest way to start a new Outlook mail message is to click the E-Mail button on the Home tab of the Outlook Ribbon or by pressing Command-N. Outlook displays an empty message-body area.

I'm using Office 2011 for Mac. I have set up Outlook to successfully send and receive email with an IMAP account. I set up an email merge in Word. When I finish the merge it asks me for the field with the email addresses, format of email and subject line. I enter all that, and it tells me it's merging the messages to my Outlook Outbox. There is no permanent Outlook Outbox, it appears to be only transitory when sending, but when I head over to Outlook there's no Outbox and nothing that has been sent.

I thought perhaps that there is an undocumented limitation that requires the Outlook account be an Exchange account? Or is it just altogether broken? Try sending in a different format (text vs HTML). A different process is used for each and the HTML will not display any error messages. People have reported that sometimes using one method will 'unblock' the other method.

I am not sure how applicable that will be to a Mac however and it might be best to ask over in a Mac forum. Hope this helps.
